BIG
BIG adjusts revenue target growth to 15% from 10% supported by camera market growth. It plans to start up “Print Gift” services in May to increase net and gross margins. (Kao Hoon, 17/03/16)
Comment: One interesting tidbit here is with the model cycle, when new models are released the older models will naturally see a drop in price, however BIG’s % margin shall remain the same and it’s the supplier that will be squeezed

CHO
CHO expects 2016 net profit will be better than last year. It expects revenue growth of 5- 10% supported by backlog of Bt650mn. It will know the outcome of its suit against the BMTA in 6 months or a year. (Kao Hoon, 17/03/16)

DAII
DAII sets 2016 revenue target growth at 15%. It plans to find a partner to do home building business in Vietnam. It expects to be No.1 in home building business in five years. (Kao Hoon, 17/03/16)

Random Thoughts: Property stimulus, Digital TV

Given that last week’s email didn’t go out, here’s the link to last week’s Random Thoughts: ADVANC, Pattaya/Utapao, Indonesia
Property Stimulus:
While I doubt there will be a huge positive impact from this stimulus measure, it’s still worth noting a few things:
  • The cabinet has approved property stimulus measures to help boost the economy. Some measures will be in effect for 6 months and other until end-2016
  • The measures include (i) reduction in transfer fee and mortgage registration fee to 0.01% from 2.0% and 1.0% respectively, (ii) tax allowance for homes priced less than Bt3m for first-time home buyers, and (iii) the GHB’s relaxation on mortgage loan approval criteria to help low-income earners. The 2% transfer fee is normally equally shared by developers and home buyers. This means tax savings of 1% each. The 1% mortgage registration fee is paid by home buyers who take mortgage financing. Buyers of homes priced less than Bt3m are eligible to utilise 20% of the price to be deducted from their taxable income (spread into five years).
  • Positive implication as the measures should help speed up transfer during the period. The magnitude of the impact varies. Those companies with lower end products ready for transfer within 2016 would see greater benefit
  • Which companies may benefit?  LPN, PS, SIRI and SPALI are the names touted by brokers but the estimated max impact is only at about 1-2% next year
Digital TV – It’s now into its 3rd year and there are still issues, and now the NBTC has come out to say:
  • 90% coverage by May ’16
  • And to provide an additional 11.99 million vouchers, worth THB 150 mn to help more households go from analog to digital TV.
  • Herein lies the issue with Digital TV thus far, there aren’t enough eyeballs on it, hence why ad rates are still rubbish relative to expectations, so if (and its a big if) the NBTC can actually ensure that another 12 mn households then you can expect to see WORK, RS and GRAMMY actually start to earn better ad rates, but this could still be years away…

AJP
AJP plans to launch new TV program on free TV after getting a three-year license for an international sports program. It expects to complete the deal for a waste power plant project at the end of June. It believes it will show a net profit this year, backed by this project. (Thun Hoon, 26/06/15)
Comment: AJP has a TV program channel + a waste power plant, again the synergies here are amazing, can you imaging the future potential of the shows, documentaries on waste power plants!!! You just have to believe. All kidding aside, while this doesn’t have any synergies at all, waste to power can be incredibly lucrative.

APCS
APCS expects no impact from becoming a major shareholder of Advance web studio. It targets 10% revenue growth this year. (Thun Hoon, 26/06/15)

BIG
BIG expects 2Q15 earnings to surge, benefitting from increase in mirror-less camera sales. It plans to introduce a new product to add to its revenue. (Khao Hoon, 26/06/15)

BTC

Comment: Another hybrid of property and alternative energy, am i missing the synergies here?

CHOW
The 3.2604MW solar power plant in Japan will operate on June 5 after the first 4.019MW solar power plant started up last year. CEO says the 10.7206MW power plant is progressing and startup is expected this year. (Thun Hoon, 04/06/15)

Comment: DEMCO’s business is well understood, but the overhanging factor remains WEH

Digital TV infighting

The new digital TV industry has been both a love and hate relationship for me, at times I can see the bull in it, about how well some new players will perform (WORK, RS), newer players receiving higher ad rates over the coming years, at other times I see the bear argument, an audience population that doesn’t have the set top boxes nor the sattelites required to view this, the high prices operators are paying just to compete for ad ratings, and now we can add into the mix a silly regulator that is probably just looking for some THB on the side, Gen Prayuth use your Article 44 and fix this rubbish.

The broadcasting regulator’s plan to postpone digital TV licence fee payments for another year may not take effect….They said the postponement of digital TV licence fee payments, which are due on May 24, would affect the government’s revenue collection…Most of the complaints have come from people who said the payment delay was “inappropriate” and rooted in the unhealthy financial status of some digital TV operators, …Last month, the NBTC approved in principle the postponement of digital TV licence fee payments for 12 months….A public hearing on the payment delay was held last week. Most of the 24 digital operators agreed to put off the second licence fee payment worth a combined 8.1 billion baht…But they did not agree with the charge of a 7.5% interest rate, as it would not serve to ease their financial burden.

Digital TV finally gets a break

The Digital TV Industry has been having its own version of battle royale with the competition for ratings sending bidding prices for new shows through the roof and if you look at every company related to digital tv, all of their earnings were poor in 2014 and 1Q15, as a result of this they have essentially gotten together to sue the NBTC into doing something to save the industry from disaster and it looks like they’ve won the first step.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) board has agreed to postpone digital TV operators’ second licence fee payment for another year.
Secretary–general Takorn Tantasith said the telecommunications regulator yesterday decided to postpone the second licence fee payment, totalling 8.7 billion baht and due on May 24, for a year to help reduce the financial burden on digital TV operators.

Thus it’s good news for WORK, RS, GRAMMY, BEC, MCOT, MONO, NMG and several other players.

Comment: Passenger growth is driven mainly by domestic travelers, the #’s for international travelers have yet to recover. The main driver of the stock price in the past 12 months have been news of a potential infrastructure fund.

APCS
APCS admits to loss for 2014. It expects recovery in 2015, but is uncertain whether it will return to profit in 2015. The company disclosed that orders from automobile sector have started picking up. The bank is seeing a migration of Chinese investment from Vietnam to Thailand due to better logistics. (Krungthep Turakij, 16/2/15)
Comment: If you listen carefully to the CEO, he doesn’t seem to want to expand strongly in Thailand anymore, their focus does appear to be purely overseas business.

AMATA
AMATA continues to invest in Vietnam via subsidiary AMATAVN, to develop an industrial park called Long Thanh. It believes this investment will support revenue growth for the company for many years to come. The firm also plans to list AMATAVN this year. (Thun Hoon, 05/02/15)
Comment: As I’ve said for the a while, AMATA will benefit this year from its IPO of AMATAVN and a REIT.

DRT
DRT expects best result for the year in 1Q15 driven by seasonality coupled with the slump in oil price. For the whole of 2015, the firm also expects the growth in revenue from last year underpinned by the bright outlook in contractor sector. (Thun Hoon, 05/02/15)
Comment: I just met DRT, whats interesting here is that they have been able to sell directly to property developers which has been a key growing part of their sales.
